ISO to Create Privacy Standards for Consumer Products

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) recently announced that it will be developing a set of preventative international guidelines that will ensure that privacy is built into the design of consumer products or services.

The new ISO project committee, ISO/PC 317, Consumer protection: privacy by design for consumer goods and services, will be composed of a team of experts tasked to create the standards which will be used to enforce compliance with regulations and generate greater consumer trust.

Addressing the recent ISO workshop in Bali, Indonesia, international privacy expert Dr. Ann Cavoukian said that prevention is also needed since regulatory compliance alone is unsustainable as the sole model for ensuring the future of privacy.
