IRS Alerts Tax Professionals Against Hackers

The Internal Revenue Services is currently ramping its efforts to alert tax professionals of cyber criminals who are looking to steal sensitive taxpayer data as Labor Day approaches.

The IRS warns tax pros that the cyber attacks might come in the form of phishing emails pretending to be from a tax software provider that pertains to a software or system update in the subject line. The user is then prompted to provide their login credentials on a fake website that looks identical to the software provider’s page.

The IRS says that legitimate companies would never ask for login detail validation, nor embed links in emails. Additionally, tax pros should be aware that devices such as printers, fax machines, routers, modems, and even televisions, can be exploited due to their weak or nonexistent security.
