Irish Government Gets Pressured Over Identity Card

The Irish government has received pressure from academic lawyers and a civil liberties group on the matter of its public services card.

The groups are calling for a public debate, challenging the policy that makes it mandatory for citizens to have an identity card before they can claim welfare benefit.

The PSC project was thrust into public scrutiny when an elderly woman’s pension was cut off when she declined to register for the card.
