iOS 11 Feature Could Inadvertently Reveal User Info to Apps

A number of security researchers have said that a new feature in Apple’s iOS 11 could inadvertently provide user information to apps that the user would rather restrict it from.

The Core ML, which is a tool for implementing machine learning algorithms, boosts tasks like facial recognition, object detection and natural language processing. Apps which use Core ML will need permission to access data streams such as the device’s mic, and researchers say that some apps could potentially use Core ML to stealthily draw conclusions about a user for other purposes.

Columbia University researcher Suman Jana says that since most machine learning models are not human-interpretable, it could be difficult to screen apps that may use Core ML to compromise or steal sensitive user data.
