28 Sep India’s Supreme Court Says Aadhaar is Legal
India’s Supreme Court ruled this week to confirm the legality of the Aadhaar, considered to be the world’s biggest biometric database.
In a 567-page judgement, the five-judge bench decided that the benefits of the Aadhaar Act outweighed the potential privacy risks, but also said that strict limits had to be set on how Aadhaar data can be used.
While the court allowed the government to require Aadhaar details when registering a tax file number, filing annual returns and claiming welfare payments, private businesses and individuals will not be allowed to request for it.
The justices also prohibited investigative agencies from accessing Aadhaar data without a warrant.
