India’s Restrictions on Tracking Minors Likely to Hurt Tech Giants

Analysts said this week that US tech giants such as Facebook, Google, and YouTube are likely to be hit by the recommendations of the Justice Srikrishna Committee on advertising and curbing data tracking of users under 18, as the websites have a huge subscription base of minors in India.

The draft data privacy law is expected to place severe restrictions on companies that operate commercial websites or online services that target or process large volumes of personal data of children. Such companies may be barred from profiling and tracking minors, carrying out behavioral monitoring or targeting them with advertisements, or undertaking any other processing of personal data that may lead to significant harm to them.
