Indian Telecoms Regulator Says Companies Not the Owner of User Personal Data

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India this week made some recommendations to the DoT concerning the data privacy and security of consumers.

The regulator said that the existing framework for the protection of the personal information of telecom customers is not enough, and pointed out that a data protection framework should consider the misuse of the consumer’s personal data by entities in the digital ecosystem.

TRAI also urged India’s government to place a mechanism for redressal of telecommunication consumers’ complaints related to data ownership, privacy, and protection.
