Indian Gov’t Seeks Feedback on Social Media Rules

The Indian government announced this week the start of public consultations on draft amendments to the rules which will seek to curb fake news and regulate internet companies such as Google.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said last Monday that stakeholders can submit comments on the proposed changes to the Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Rules under Section 79 of the IT Act until January 15, 2019.

First notified in 2011, the draft amendments will compel companies not only to trace and report the origin of messages within 72 hours of a complaint from law enforcement, but also “disable access” to defamatory content, or any content against national security and other clauses under Article 19 (2) of the Constitution within 24 hours.
