India May Compel Tech Firms to Store Data Locally

Reuters revealed this week that India is considering compelling e-commerce and social media firms to exclusively store data locally, according to an undated Draft National Policy document that seeks to streamline regulation of the country’s burgeoning e-commerce sector.

The draft policy may also increase scrutiny on mergers in the sector, and it is said that even small deals that potentially distort competition will be compulsorily examined by the country’s anti-trust regulator.

The pan however, unsettled many privacy advocates which say that the government would surely have access to locally data stored for national security and public policy objectives subject to rules related to privacy and consent.
