House to Probe Facebook Privacy Scandal

Earlier this week, the chair of the House of Representatives’ information and communications technology committee said that it will be conducting an investigation into Facebook’s breach which involved the data of around 1.18 million Filipino users.

According to Tarlac Rep. Victor Yap who filed House Resolution No. 1871, there is a need for Congress to strengthen privacy standards and guarantee transparency. He added that the data harvested by foreign political consultancy Cambridge Analytica misused the personal and sensitive information of Filipinos.

Yap additionally revealed that the firm’s parent company, Strategic Communications Laboratories, helped rebrand an incumbent candidate during the last national election.
