11 Nov House Judiciary Committee Approves FISA Privacy Protections
Last Wednesday, The U.S. House Judiciary Committee gave its approval to legislation which reauthorizes Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) with new privacy protections.
The FISA allows the US government to conduct surveillance on foreign nationals outside of the US. However, the USA Liberty Act also states that authorities need a probable cause-based order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court if they wish to use metadata or content of communications for finding criminal evidence.
The bill was protested last month by rights organizations including the American Civil Liberties Union which pointed out that it leaves room for the government to make queries and access content even without a warrant.
