Hotspot Shield VPN Flaw Exposes User Identity and Locations

A security researcher named Paulos Yibelo revealed this week that the names and location of Hotspot Shield users can be exposed by the information disclosure bug in the privacy service.

According to Yibelo, the bug found in the web server installed by Hotspot Shield leaks information such as the user’s country and Wi-Fi network name, which can be used with publicly available data to narrow down the user’s location.

However, the company behind Hotspot Shield, AnchorFree, said that the flaw only exposes generic information and not the user’s IP or personal information. Nevertheless, they will be rolling out an update to address it, they assured.
