Hong Kong DPA Warns Against Consumer Loyalty Schemes

Last Monday, Hong Kong’s privacy chief told consumers to be wary of membership and rewards programmes, as most of these schemes may not provide them with transparency, choices and control over the use of their personal data.

In a recent report, Privacy Commissioner Stephen Wong Kai-yi told retail firms to ensure that their privacy policies and practices are thoroughly explained to customers, and to respect their right to privacy.

The report looked into 30 popular customer loyalty and rewards programmes from the retail, hotel, catering, airline, cinema and petrol sector in late May 2017, and found that most lacked transparency and used vague and broad language.
