03 Dec Healthcare Sector Has the Biggest Data Leaks, New Study Says
In a recent study, researchers from Michigan State University found that the biggest source of leaked data comes from healthcare and medical providers, instead of hacking incidents as commonly believed.
Studying datasets involving personal health information, it was revealed there were almost 1,800 occurrences of large data breaches in patient information over a seven-year period, with 33 hospitals experiencing more than one substantial breach. There were also 53 percent that were the result of internal factors in healthcare entities.
Lead researcher in the study Dr. John (Xuefeng) Jiang said that there is no perfect way to store information, but more than half of the cases that they reviewed were caused by internal negligence and not external triggers.
