Google to Offer Gmail with Advanced Protection Program

A version of Gmail with heightened security features will soon be made available to high value targets such as politicians and corporate executives.

Called the Advanced Protection Program, the service will use Google’s USB security key technology, which is a physical key instead of two-step verification. The keys will also verify if the user is on a legitimate site, and third party apps will be not be able to access email data.

A phishing attack that used a fake Docs app earlier this year prompted Google to tighten its OAuth registration process.
