Germany May Force Manufacturers to Ship Devices with Backdoors

According to RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND) this week, the German government is preparing a law that will compel manufacturers to install a backdoor on their devices which the authorities can use to aid their investigations.

The proposal, which is backed by Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière, will also cover products such as cars, phones, computers, and IoT products. The Interior Minister said that companies have a “legal obligation” to put a backdoor for law enforcement use, and also called on the tech industry to give the government access to its programming tools for analysis.
