Germany Bans Sale of Kids’ Smartwatches

Germany’s Bundesnetzagentur recently prohibited the sale of children’s smartwatches and instructed those who already own them to destroy their devices.

Some of the smartwatches apparently had a remote listening feature which is considered as an unauthorized transmitting system under German law. It is said that the capability is sometimes used by parents to secretly listen in on their kid’s activities, and sometimes even on their child’s teachers.

The Norwegian Consumer Council had already reported on similar kids smartwatches where it was revealed that security flaws in such devices can allow predators to spy on children and know their location.
