German Court Says Facebook Messages Can be Inherited

The highest court in Germany made a landmark ruling this week and decided that the parents of a girl who had been killed by a train should be able to access their daughter’s Facebook account and messages.

The court ultimately decided that such digital content can be considered as diaries or letters and should be inherited by the owner’s legal heirs. However, it was noted that Facebook had denied the parents access since 2012 when their daughter died.

The parents said that they may be able to determine if their daughter’s death was a suicide by reading the Facebook messages in her account. If it is, then the train driver would also be compensated.
