30 Nov FTC Reaffirms Commitment to Privacy Before Senate Subcommittee
FTC Chairman Joseph J. Simons and Commissioners Noah Joshua Phillips, Rohit Chopra, Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Christine S. Wilson testified this week before the U.S. Senate Commerce Subcommittee on the agency’s work on various areas including data security.
In a press release, the agency reiterated its commitment to prioritizing consumer privacy and data security. The FTC also revealed that it has brought more than 60 data security cases where companies had failed to implement reasonable safeguards, and more than 60 general privacy cases as well.
However, Simons said that although they were able to challenge numerous privacy and security practices under Section Five of the FTC Act, it is an imperfect tool and the Commission would be able to do more if given greater authority.
