06 Oct FTC Calls for “Critical Rethink” of Data Privacy
At a recent hearing entitled “Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century.”, the FTC’s Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter urged for a “critical rethink” of the agency’s approach to data privacy.
The Commissioner said that since technological innovation has raised serious and important questions of law and policy, the FTC has to rethink what it does, how it does it, and what it should do differently to advance its mission of promoting competition and protecting consumers.
The FTC, which had its authority extended to cover privacy and data security, recently received the support of the US’s top tech firms at the Senate hearing, with companies such as Google and Apple urging lawmakers to vest additional powers to the agency.
