23 Jan French Data Regulator Hands Google €50 Million Fine
It was announced this week that French data protection watchdog CNIL had given Google a hefty €50 million fine for violating the GDPR’s rules on transparency and lacking legal basis to process personal data.
Privacy activist and lawyer Max Schrems of non-profit NOYB (None of Your Business) said that the penalty marks the first time a European data protection authority is using the possibilities of GDPR to punish clear violations of the law.
Schrems added that corporations such as Google often interpret the law differently and merely adapt their products so they can claim to be compliant, which is not enough.
