Firefox Add-On Caught Harvesting User’s Browsing History

A German privacy and security blogger Mike Kuketz recently revealed that a popular Firefox add-on named Web Security had secretly been collecting the browsing history of users.

The add-on, which had already been used by 222,746 Firefox users, claims to actively protect from malware, tampered websites or phishing sites that aim to steal personal data. However, uBlock Origin author Raymond Hill said on Reddit that the add-on exhibited a weird behavior where it posts garbled data to http://136.243.163.73/.

Mozilla has not yet removed Web Security from its add-ons portal as it takes a few days for its engineers to review suspicious add-ons.
