Feds Pressured to Reveal Cellphone Spying Statistics

The Electronic Privacy Information Center has compelled the federal government this week to reveal data on its cellphone spying programs by filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit this week in a US District Court in Washington.

In its complaint, EPIC challenged the use, effectiveness, cost and necessity of the collection and use of cell site location information by law enforcement agencies. The watchdog added that the Department of Justice has never produced any comprehensive reports concerning the use of cell site data.

EPIC also argued that the law enforcement’s use of location records is not subject to detailed reporting requirements similar to those of Wiretap Act authorities.
