Federal Government Responds to Opposition in Bitcoin Records Case

Reports revealed that last Friday, the Federal government filed answers to amicus curiae briefs filed by the Digital Currency & Ledger Defense Coalition (DCLDC), the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), and Coin Center on the matter of underreporting and noncompliance of Coinbase customers.

The parties argued that the IRS was overreaching when it filed a “John Doe” summons on all US customers of Coinbase, a San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange, who made Bitcoin transfers from 2013 to 2015.

The IRS justified the necessity of the John Doe summons, saying that they needed more information to ascertain the exact scale and identities involved in the Coinbase case.
