Facebook Slowly Acquainting Users to Facial Recognition Features Under Tightening Privacy Rules

Facebook has recently sent its users notifications regarding its increasingly comprehensive facial recognition features.

The message mentions how facial technology is used on the platform and how users can manage its  setting. However, the features will not be introduced in Canada and the European Union given the stricter data collection rules in those regions.

The notification also came shortly before a significant ruling by a California court against Facebook which says that the company is bound by the Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act which requires the company to obtain user consent before collecting biometric data.
