Facebook Awards Grant to Researcher for Fixing Data Leak

A cybersecurity expert from Northeastern University was recently given a grant by Facebook after providing the company a fix for a data leak he also discovered.

Associate professor of computer and information science Alan Mislove was awarded $60,000 through Facebook’s Secure the Internet grant program after he and his graduate student Giridhari Venkatadri revealed a vulnerability on Facebook’s ad platform allowed hackers access to user phone numbers.

Mislove said that the flaw does not just apply to Facebook, but to other large internet companies such as Google, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn that use similar ad services.
