10 May Ex-Facebook CEO Says Users Partly to Blame for Privacy Issue
In an interview last Tuesday, managing partner of venture firm Social Capital Chamath Palihapitiya remarked that Facebook data-privacy problem was partly brought about by the addiction of consumers to free things.
Palihapitiya was quoted saying “For 20 years, none of us have had to pay for amazing things in tech. What do you expect when you pay for nothing?”
Palihapitiya previously headed user growth for mobile and international at Facebook and is noted to have been critical of the company in 2017. In a previous speech at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, he said he felt “tremendous guilt” about helping the company build social media tools which are being used to rip the fabric of society apart.
