Ex-Employee Reveals Cellphone Tracking Being Used in Canadian Mall

A former Cadillac Fairview employee recently revealed that a Canadian real estate company had installed a cellphone monitoring system in at least one of its malls which it uses to track the movement of shoppers.

The source, who provided access for the system’s installation in 2016, said that the system would monitor the location of each device within the centre and how long it remained in any particular spot.

The company meanwhile refused to issue an official comment, but their online privacy policy states that some properties are equipped with sensors and cameras used to monitor foot traffic patterns that could predict “demographic information” about visitors during a shopping centre visit.
