25 Jan European Commission Announces Adoption of Adequacy Decision on Japan
This week, the European Commission adopted an adequacy decision on the transfer of personal data from the EU to Japan.
In a joint statement, EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Věra Jourová and Commissioner of the Personal Information Protection Commission of Japan Haruhi Kumazawa said that the mutual adequacy finding built on the convergence of the EU and Japan’s systems rest notably on an overarching privacy law, a core set of individual rights and enforcement by an independent data protection authority.
The EU also issued a press release prior to the adoption which details the additional safeguards placed by Japan.
