EU to Impose Fines for Abuse of Personal Data in Upcoming Elections

The European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee is backing a proposal to impose fines on parties and foundations that use personal data to influence the upcoming elections to the EU legislature.

According to a press release on the EU Parliament’s website this week, the new provisions seek to protect the electoral process from online disinformation campaigns based on misuse of voters’ personal data.

However, the committee’s decision will have to be submitted for inter-institutional discussions and approved both by the rest of the parliament and the European Council before the proposal takes effect.
