EU Firms Balk Against New Privacy Rules

A number of European internet, media, and telecom companies lashed out against the upcoming GDPR last Wednesday, saying that the new rules will just hand Silicon Valley tech giants more power over user data.

In an open letter titled “Europe cannot afford to miss the data revolution”, French telecom giants Orange and SFR, German group Deutsche Startups and the European Magazine Media Association said that the rules would not only be a threat to innovative European startups and various other sectors, but also undermine the role of the press and media in European democracy.

The organizations pointed out that users will further be subjected to targeted advertising if they are asked once and for all whether would like to accept cookies rather than every time they visit a new website, as prescribed in the new regulation.
