EU and Japan Announce Data Agreement as US Privacy Shield Tensions Rise

Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová revealed last Wednesday that Japan and the EU will be forging a reciprocal agreement recognizing each other’s data protection systems.

In her tweet, Jourová said that the agreement will bring a lot of benefit to EU companies as it will facilitate the easier flow of data with a key commercial partner & allow privileged access to 127 million Japanese people.

Meanwhile, the Commission will be reviewing the effectiveness of the EU-US privacy shield in October, and Jourová reiterated that the EU will take action if requirements are not met in terms of US compliance with the agreement.
