EU‑US Privacy Shield Framework Gets Positive Feedback in First Review

Earlier this week, the first review of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield was held by the EU and the Department of Commerce where visiting EU officials acknowledged that it was “intact and working”.

The Privacy Shield, which is participated by around 2,400 organizations including tech giants Microsoft, Google, and Facebook, mandates transparency for usage of personal data by companies, as well as increased cooperation with EU data protection authorities, and strong US government oversight.

Despite the Trump administration’s move on the Federal Privacy Act that excludes individuals outside the US, EU officials said that such events did not affect the data that was exchanged under the Privacy Shield, and merely expressed some concerns that pose a minor challenge for the annual review.
