EFF Sues San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Over Cell-Site Simulators

The Electronic Frontier Foundation filed a lawsuit this week against the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department today to determine if the police’s use of cell-site simulators in criminal investigations were justified.

The online privacy rights group sought to to gain access to records about search warrants where the devices that allow police to locate and track people by tricking their cell phones into a connection, were authorized under the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA).

Also known as Stingrays, cell-site simulators are surveillance tools that can reveal the location of all cell phones in a targeted area and is not able to target only those which belong to people suspected of committing a crime.
