29 Jun Dutch Privacy Watchdog Says Explicit Consent Needed for Billboards with Cameras
After receiving reports from concerned citizens, Dutch Data Protection Authority AP recently said that explicit permission must be obtained to use cameras embedded in billboards and advertising pillars since image registration involves the processing of personal data.
The embedded cameras are used to capture images of viewers to fine tune ad targeting. Operators use the system to count people or match the most appropriate ads to the characteristics of the passerby.
The AP urged the industry to take measures against the use of such cameras to ensure GDPR compliance.
