Don’t Use Data Privacy Act for Subterfuge – NPC Chair

Last Tuesday, Chairman Raymund E. Liboro of the National Privacy Commission (NPC) said that the Data Privacy Act should not be used to prevent the processing and/or disclosure of personal information which is sanctioned under law.

According to the NPC chair, questions on the legal basis for the SALN and what it calls for should be addressed, based on Section 11 of the DPA, or Republic Act No. 10173.

The statement was made in response to the SALN redaction issue, in which Liboro cited Section 8 of RA (Republic Act No.) 6713 (Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officers and Employees).

He added that information required by RA 6713 pertaining to assets, liabilities and net worth and financial and business interests of the spouse and unmarried children under 18, cannot be redacted.
