DICT Wants Facebook to Build Data Centers in the Country

Assistant Secretary Allan Cabanlong of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) suggested last weekend Facebook should look into building data centers in the Philippines, given the number of users in the country which is one of the highest in the world.

It was recently revealed that the personal data of around 1.2 million Filipino users, out of 87 million others around the world, had been affected in the breach case involving Cambridge Analytica. Cabanlong said that data centers in the Philippines are needed in order to better protect the data of Filipinos, and the DICT, together with the NPC is already studying the possibility of such a proposal.

He further added that the DICT has also began conducting Cybersecurity Caravans across the country in an effort to raise the awareness of Filipinos on potential cyberspace threats.
