Chinese Millennials Quit WeChat Over Privacy Fears

According to recent interviews, Chinese millennials are reportedly leaving WeChat due to lack of privacy and possible mass surveillance. One such user named Wang Zizheng said that he quit the popular messaging app after learning that parent company Tencent hands over user data to the government when it is legally compelled to do so, as stated in its privacy policy.

It was also pointed out that WeChat does not use end-to-end encryption, which is currently the gold standard for internet privacy.

In his blog post in 2016 entitled “Bye-bye WeChat”, Chinese tech blogger Lawrence Li also said that the app offers no hope in terms of privacy, and it is known that people in the public security bureau have every right to read all our chat histories when they need to.
