China’s Digital Silk Road Marred by Surveillance Fears

Experts recently warned that China’s development of cross-border communication networks and e-commerce links may be used by Beijing for its intelligence operations.

In its Belt and Road Initiative, China is reportedly engaging in various efforts such as build fiber optic cables, international trunk passageways and mobile structures in countries tied to its investment plans. However, concerns about the insertion of backdoor mechanisms which could increase the Chinese government’s intelligence and propaganda operations were raised by the Council of Foreign Relations in a note last week.

It was also suggested that previous actions by the Beijing, such as installing backdoors in encryption technology, may be repeated when installing fiber optic cables in other countries.
