22 Aug China Might Compromise Australian Network in Solomon’s Internet Deal
Security experts have expressed their concerns regarding a deal between the Solomon Islands and Chinese ICT provider Huawei to speed up the South Pacific nation’s internet.
The 4500 undersea cable project that was backed by the Australian Government, the Asian Development Bank, was supposed to go to a British-American company. However, allegations that the Chinese company might have paid off the Solomon’s ruling party have surfaced.
The deal also did not go through the proper processes, which raises further suspicions. The US had also previously said that Huawei is a security threat since it cannot be trusted to be free of foreign state influence.
