China Gives 5 Year Sentence to Owner of VPN Service

A Chinese man named Wu Xiangyang was recently sentenced to 5 years in prison for running a VPN service without a permit.

Wu was also fined a total of $75,000 for running the service from 2013 to this year where he made $120,000.

China has not yet blocked VPNs officially, but those who want to provide the service should first register and secure a permit with the government. Chinese authorities began their crackdown on unauthorized VPN providers last January, and Wu’s sentence is seen as an escalation in their efforts.
