Canadian Ex-Privacy Head: No need to Sacrifice Privacy for Security

Former Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario Ann Cavoukian recently told Canadian users that they do not need to choose between privacy and security.

She said that terror incidents often put the focus on security in expense of privacy, but she pointed out that citizens must have both since privacy forms the foundation of Canada’s freedom and liberty.

Cavoukian is now a Distinguished Expert-in-Residence at Ryerson University and has recently formed a new council called Global Privacy and Security by Design which promotes and advocates research into greater privacy protections. Included in on the council’s board are notable industry personalities such as Telus CEO Darren Entwistle, SecureKey CEO Greg Wolfond, and former US secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.
