Brazil Passes GDPR-Inspired Data Protection Bill

Brazil passed this week a draft legislation inspired by Europe’s GDPR that seeks to foster a better data protection environment online.

Authored by congressman Milton Monti, the Bill seeks the creation of a general legal framework that will protect the data of individuals and businesses and prevent the commercial use of information such as names, telephone numbers and addresses without the subject’s consent.

The Bill will also cover data leaks and see the creation of a National Data Protection Authority which will address matters relating to data protection including monitoring, law enforcement and sanctions.
