15 Nov Australia’s My Health Record System to Remain Opt-out
The Australian Senate passed last Thursday amendments which introduced a few changes to the My Health Records Amendment (Strengthening Privacy) Bill 2018.
While the system will be given improved privacy provisions, the automatic creation of digital health records will continue as planned for those who chose not to opt out by the new deadline of January 31, and the “secondary use” of health data will get regulatory oversight from a new Data Governance Board.
The Strengthening Privacy Bill now allows healthcare recipients to cancel their record. If they do, the data will have to be deleted “as soon as practicable”, unless there is a legal requirement to keep or disclose the information.
