03 Oct Australian Same-sex Vote Database Sharing a Gray Area, Divides Experts
Some legal experts have expressed their concerns over a request made by the pro-same-sex marriage lobby in the Liberal Party for voter information, calling it a legal gray area.
David Vaile of the UNSW Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre executive director said that even though the party is aware that it is risking its reputation by sharing such information, it would not be illegal to do so, given the country’s lax privacy laws.
Privacy expert Jake Goldenfein of the Swinburne University says that such sharing could be legal, depending on the kind of information provided from the database, and how it is used.
A number of Coalition party members have resisted the request of the Yes group, citing that the transfer of the files could could result to a breach of voter privacy.
