09 Jan Australian Privacy Foundation Warns Against Trusting Government with Open Data
The Australian Privacy Foundation recently called out the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and the federal government for not publishing a report on the incident that involved the leak of Medicare Benefits Schedule and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme data in September 2016.
The APF was quoted saying that trusting the government with open data was a “recipe for pain”, and urged it to develop security controls around sharing open data and provide the OAIC with ‘adequate’ resources.
The APF additionally blasted the government and the OAIC for lack of transparency, and pointed out that aside from not indicating when the report will be released; there had also been no warnings made about the bug in open data; and no requirement to reconsider the misplaced trust in the de-identification of data.
