05 Oct Australian PM Pushes for More Facial Recognition, Alarms Privacy Groups
Canberra, Australia – Last Thursday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull revealed plans to bolster Australia’s anti-terror effort by employing greater facial recognition measures.
Turnbull is currently pushing states and territories to submit the driver’s license photos of all citizens which will be added to a database that includes passport and citizenship application photos, a move that alarmed numerous privacy advocates,
It is said that a number of state leaders have already shown support for the proposal, which may eventually be expanded to include photos from social media.
Jeremy Malcolm of Electronic Frontier Foundation pointed out that this poses a serious privacy and security risk, since unlike passwords, it is impossible to change one’s face in the event of a breach.
