Australian Booking Service Shares Medical Data with Injury Lawyers

A Telstra-backed online appointment booking service was found to have shared the medical data of around 200 clients per month with personal injury lawyers Slater and Gordon who are said to have been used the information for targeting ads.

The startup reportedly gave information to the law firm, including medical conditions and workplace injury, in its referral partnership pilot between March to August 2017. However, the company specifically states on its website that they will not be providing their clients’ personal information to a third party without express consent, except as required or permitted by law, or in circumstances described in their privacy policy. It also clarified that they may disclose de-identified information of users to third parties for “analysis, research, and quality assurance purposes”.
