06 Dec Australian Attorney-General Want Notices Sent ASAP on Approval of Anti-Encryption Bill
Australian Attorney-General Christian Porter said this week that he wants law enforcement agencies such as the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), Australian Federal Police (AFP), and state police forces to immediately make use of the provisions in the Assistance and Access Bill.
Once the legislation is proclaimed, the agencies will be able to send Technical Assistance Notices, Technical Capability Notices, and Technical Assistance Requests. Porter says that the police and other such agencies should send notices off to Microsoft and WhatsApp asap when reasonable and necessary.
Porter also clarified that the powers are only meant to target individuals suspected of terrorism, homicide offences, serious drug offences, and serious child sex offences, and the law has a very clear provision in it that nothing in the nature of systemic weaknesses across multiple phones can be created.
