Australia May Get Its Own GDPR

Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie recently expressed her opinions on the country’s cybersecurity matters at the Australian Computer Society’s Reimagination Thought Leaders’ Summit. She revealed that the mandatory data breach notification laws, as well as the following others, should compel everyone in Australia’s cyber ecosystem to follow best practice with regards to information security.

She added that cyber breaches have disastrous consequences. McKenzie pointed out that while it is indeed the government’s, the ASIO’s, DSTO’s, and the defence’s responsibility to protect cybersecurity, SME’s and private homeowners should also do their part to keep their data safe.

The senator also mentioned that Australia is in the process of growing a strong cybersecurity industry which has the potential to contribute greatly to global data and communications security.
